Symbolism

SHIELD

Gold represents excellence; red, white and blue signify the Coast Guard traditional colors and the water upon which they serve. The three silver gray pheons, points down, symbolize the enemy's fire rockets, mortars, and small arms. The rayonne depicts the fire's flames and Engineman Robert Yered's courageous actions in placing others before himself and exposing himself to enemy fire in the line of defense of the terminal of Cat-Lai, Vietnam. The pile surmounted with a red gear alludes to his rank of Engineman and to his heroism in extinguishing the fire on a burning barge, averting destruction of the ammunition ship. The gear charge with a golpe signifies the Purple Heart awarded by the U.S. Army for his service in Vietnam.

CREST

The torse colors, blue and gold, are symbolic of honor and excellence. The palms symbolize the dedication to duty in defense of one's country and the honor bestowed on Engineman Yered for his valorous acts, represented by the silver star fimbriated green.

SUPPORTERS

The oar and trident represent the crew of the USCGC Robert Yered.
